Obituary of Edward Roy Oslund
Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edward Roy Oslund, 100, left us to join his beloved wife Peggy on September 27, 2022 a journey he longed for and for which he was fully prepared. Born on November 15, 1921 in St. Paul, MN to Edward and Hildeborg Oslund, Ed was a proud Swede, a life-long St. Paul EastSider, and a member of the Johnson High School Hall of Fame. Prior to Peggy’s death in 2013, she and Ed were happily married for 65 wonderful years.
Ed graduated the Minneapolis School of Art in 1948. His vocation was commercial art, but his avocation was service to others. Ed served his country as a member of an artillery battalion during WWII, landing in Normandy with his fellow soldiers on August 5, 1944. He spent the rest of his life sharing his kindness and talents with his family and his community. Ed helped support an art scholarship at Johnson High through the sales of prints of one of his watercolor paintings, served the hungry through Loaves & Fishes well into his mid-90’s, and his beautiful painted tapestries still adorn the walls of Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church in St. Paul, where he was a member for decades.
Ed was the best dad, father-in-law, grandpa, and great grandpa we could ever have wished for. He showed us the true meaning of character. He was humble, kind, curious and funny, always making the well-being and happiness of others his first priority. Ed always saw the best in other people. He asked for nothing and gave everything. Dad, we will think of you every time we look at one of your lovely watercolor landscape paintings.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Andy, Helen and Bob. He is survived by his sister Lucille, his children Janet (Doug) Grove and David (Mary Pat) Oslund, his grandchildren, Jason Grove (Sara), Katherine, Joey and David Oslund, great-grandchildren Zach, Katie and Luke Grove, and many nieces and nephews.
In his final weeks, Ed told us often that he was ready to go to be with Peggy, but his beautiful strong heart would simply not let him go. We are so sad to have him leave us, but so happy knowing he now is exactly where he wants to be. Ed’s family wants to say thank you to the nurses and other caregivers at Lyngblomsten Care Center, his hospice nurses and chaplains from Allina, and his pastors from GA Church. They all treated Ed with amazing compassion and respect, allowing him to pass with dignity.
Funeral service 11AM Wednesday, October 5th, Gustavus Adolphus Church, 1669 Arcade, St. Paul. Private interment Fort Snelling at a later date. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to G.A. Church or Loaves & Fishes.
