My auntie Gina was one of the most important people in my life- she was my best friend growing up and some of my best childhood memories were spent with her! We shared many of the same special interests and bonded over singing together! I’m so grateful for her presence in my life, and I’ll love and remember her forever! - Katie Rose Turbes

From day 1 Gina was Daddy’s little girl, his Deet Deet. His faith and love absorbed by Gina’s admiration. She held on to his faith and with her love of Baby Jesus colored her days, the good, the bad and the ugly, but Gina held on. She was passionate and had no fear to show her true feelings. Her hugs always genuine and accompanied by her ear to ear smiles and the sparkle in her eyes.
Family was everything to Gina. After moving back to St. Paul from Cambridge, rarely would she miss a family dinner, and if she could, would spend a night or two in her childhood home with her childhood treasures.
I think Christmas was Gina’s favorite time of year. That twinkle in her eyes made the holiday lights and tinsel shine brighter. The presents under the tree all pretty and stacked just waiting for the chief gift *un*wrapper. Gina’s skills and speed was unmatchable. The bows and ribbons, scraps of ripped apart paper and boxes flew around the room, the gifts revealed and distributed to her mesmerized audience.
Being one of 6 children, Gina’s influence on her siblings were life affirming and inspirational. Patty and Liz becoming seekers of truth and educators, her brother Tom an exceptional and compassionate nurse, and a constant role model and mentor for her younger sisters, Cathy and Teresa.
When my child came along, Gina took on the role of best friend. Gina’s maternal instincts were clear through her unconditional love for Katie, visible with every interaction. Gina’s fun loving and playful demeanor pure and sweet. As Katherine grew so did their bond over Mickey Mouse, coffee, movies and songs.
I’m terrible with remembering titles of songs, let alone the words, so it became a frequent suggestion to Katherine to ask Auntie Gina. If you had a few words or the first few musical notes of a tune, Gina would break out in song, singing word for word the song being referenced, in its entirety. Her enthusiasm and love of music created the decades long family songfests that will continue.
Gina loved traveling (Disney World), loved going to concerts (Peter, Paul and Mary), loved attending live performances (ballets at O’Shaughnessy), loved to dance, loved to eat, loved her friends and family, and loved God.
Gina, my sister-in-law and friend, now at home in the company of heavenly angels and in the arms of our Father, free.
All my love,
Gillian

Starting in 1955, the Lippert family lived on Cretin Avenue. Around the corner on Selby Avenue was the Turbes family. Regina (Gina) Turbes was my age - her nickname was Bucky. I remember her, smiling, dark curly hair, part of her family, our family, our tight knit neighborhood where we could be adventurous and feel safe, looked after and loved.
Like my sister Mary Loretta, Gina was born with developmental disabilities (as were her two younger sisters Teresa and Catherine).
Something wonderful came out of the nexus of these two families with four children with special needs. Our parents worked hard to make sure their daughters could live full lives. Gina's brother Tom became a nurse; my brother Dan became a social worker.
My siblings and I joined with Patty and Liz Turbes to advocate, not just for our sisters, but also for all people with developmental disabilities. Gina led the way.

Oh, Theresa. Thank you for your remembrance of our two families' bond. I consider ourselves lucky to have had such unique solidarity. We both had great parents who taught us about love, loyalty, compassion and social justice. And our siblings have carried on the legacy.

To the Turbes Family,
My deepest condolences to you all for the loss of your sister Gina. I have known Gina since 1991 when she moved into Furness House. I loved hearing Gina and your Dad singing hymns together. Always needing a cup of coffee, her beads on, and sharing a good knock knock joke. I recall your Mom having happy tears in her eyes when she saw 3 of her daughters finally living together. Such an honor to have served Gina for so long. Peace and hugs to all of you.

Your words of comfort bring tears to my eyes as well. I admire all of you at Phoenix Residence, Inc. who have dedicated your lives to caring for those who much of our society ignores. Thank you, Mary. My parents welcomed Gina with loving arms and for sure, joyous singing. And of course, a cup of coffee.

I only personally knew Gina for a few months when she returned to PAI, but during that time she brought me so much joy. She filled my life with knock knock jokes, singing songs together, dancing and polka. We had so much fun together painting her nails and making her coffee. She was truly so special. I feel so blessed that I was privileged enough to know her and work with her.

Gina's ritual every morning was to put on her beads to complete her ensemble. She also felt special when her nails were polished. She loved to sing with her sisters at every opportunity. And her favorite drink was coffee, followed by cocoa. She especially enjoyed attending Phoenix Alternatives, the day activity center she attended for 25 years. She would get special attention, participate in activities and field trips and socialize with her many friends there.
Regina idolized her father. She was daddy's 'Little Deet-Deet'. Now she is reunited with her beloved Daddy and Mommy. We will miss her terribly.
