I saw Bill's Obituary in the Sunday paper.
To say it gave me pause is an understatement.
I met "Coach Lynch" when I tried out for the St.Thomas swim team in 1968. I needed a lot of help with my stroke and he gave it to me and to my other teammates. We swam "for him" until I graduated in 1971.
Bill was a very very good swimmer himself (an early version of Michael Phelps with his long arms and hands and feet ). He held St.Thomas pool records for many years in the 50 & 100 yd free style events.
His name and times were displayed on a large board in the pool area for the fans to see. I first saw them when I went there to swim in 7th or 8th grade.
We had small and not very talented teams those years but we all tried our hardest "for him". He and his assistant Coach and his fellow teammate Geo
Sullkey swam together on even smaller teams than we had and had to swim an event and get right back up on the blocks when they finished and swim another ! That's hard sled'in ! We all tried to do our best "for him" because we new he had "walked the walked". He was a John Wayne to us.
He was a great role model & inspiration for me and my fellow teammates (one of which is his brother Tom, "T Bone" Lynch) in and out of the pool and after
graduation when I saw him from time to time.
Prayers and Best Wishes to all of his family. He was truly a great one.

Q: What 3 words best describe William and why?
A: Teacher, mentor, confidant. I worked for Mr. Lynch for 3 years in the JHS bookstore. He became my mentor always had time to listen, offer advice and a smile. My senior year Mr. Lynch injured his back and was unable to finish out the school year and relied on me to keep the bookstore running. Mr. Lynch was able to come to our last reunion 40 years! Mr.Ales brought him.. now there together again! RIP Mr. Lynch
