One day when Jerry was around three years old, he sought out his Mother. He had a knot in his shoelace and asked his Mom to help take the knot out of his lace. Mom got down to work on the little shoe and after a few seconds, untied the knot and retied his laces properly in a bow. When she was through, little Jerry looked up at his Mom, put out his hand, and said, "Now give it to me."

The growing Ronsberg family was living on the family farm in Barnsville, MN. Jerry was about four years old at the time and Lynn was about three. The two siblings were sitting side by side on the step between the living room and the kitchen. My Mother overheard Jerry ask his little sister, Lynn, " Do you know what Mr. and Mrs. means? " Three year old Lynn was unable to provide an answer, so her wiser older brother stated, "that means both you and me!"

Jerry was born one year and one day before his younger sister, Lynn. On Jerry's third birthday, his parents gave him a little tool chest filled with small tools appropriate for a three year old little boy. Upon opening his birthday gift, Jerry opened the tool chest, pulled out his brand new 6 inch ruler, broke it in half, and offered half of his new ruler to his younger sister. He wanted to be sure that Lynn wasn't overlooked in the celebration, and wanted to share his new birthday gift with her to be sure she received a gift too. The gift she received that day was much larger than the three inches piece of ruler her brother proudly handed her.

"Each one of us here today, will at one time in our lives, look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing to help, Lord, but what, if anything is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give, or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is, those we live with and should know, who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding." - Norman Maclean A River Runs Through It and Other Stories

Just a few years ago, Jerry and I were talking under one of Dad's "Maplewood trees" in the back yard at Frank Street. The gentle breeze would have gone unnoticed, except for the little inch worm that dangled between us from that tree, slowly swaying back and forth from the line it had spun. As we talked, we watched the little worm as he made his was closer and closer to the ground, gently rocked by the breeze. At some point, I put my hand up to cut the line the worm had spun. Jerry grabbed my hand and in a startled voice said, "Don't hurt him! He didn't do anything." I said, "Jerry, it is a worm." "I know," he said, "but he didn't do anything! Don't hurt him!" We watched the worm as it made its way all the way to the ground. My heart smiled as my brother, adorned in his Harley gear, could do nothing other than protect that innocent little worm.

"JR" Big Brother A hungry mind, seeking truth; A gentle soul, desperate to be understood; A caring heart, yearning for a like rhythm; An individual spirit, searching for reflection; A gift, half opened, off on angel's wings. I love you Jerry. Thanks for loving me the way you did. You will always be my big brother and I will always love you. Your little sister, Betty

Chuck forwarded the information to all of us Sheffler kids. I am sorry to read of JR's passing. We all have such fond memories of your entire family and living next door. We had such a great neighborhood growing up and will always remember the times playing outside on the street and ice skating in our shared back yard. Dorothy I am so sorry that you have to experience the loss of your son. I will be thinking about you. Wish I could see you all. Tim and I are in St. Louis, Bruce and Andy in Illinois and Chuck and Dick up there. I know you will all find comfort in being together. My prayers are with you, "Sally"
