Obituary of John Oscar Skooglun

John was born January 26, 1925 in St Paul, MN. A proud Swedish East-sider, John graduated from Johnson High School in 1943. He served in the 10th Mountain Division of the US Army from July 1943-April 1946. An AA degree from the U of M in 1955 and BS from St Cloud State Teachers College in 1957 completed John's formal education, however he remained a life-long learner and world traveler. For over 20 years, John taught in Chatfield, MN; Wisconsin Dells, and St Croix Falls, after which he worked at the Mpls VA, helping other veterans access their benefits. He belonged to several RR clubs, the 10th Mountain Association, and was an Honor Flight participant in October 2011. John was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Esther (Nelson) Skooglun, his sister, Betty, and long-time companion Eleanor "Ellie" Carlson. He is survived by his many cherished friends and cousins on both sides of the family. Visitation 4-6PM Wednesday, Sept 21 at Anderson Funeral Home, 1401 Arcade St, St. Paul. Funeral Service 10AM Thursday, Sept 22 at the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel with a visitation at 9:30. Burial with full military honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery follows at 10:45.
